Cavities Between Teeth: What Patients Need to Know

May 15, 2022

We all know that cavities can form on the surface of a tooth. But what about cavities between teeth? This is a common problem that many patients aren’t even aware of. So what are the signs of cavities between teeth- and can anything be done to prevent them? Read on to get the answers.

What Causes Cavities Between Teeth?

Cavities are all caused by the same issue, regardless of where they form in the mouth. The issue is tooth decay, which forms as a result of bacteria in the mouth. This bacteria creates plaque and tartar, both of which damage the tooth enamel. If the bacteria is not properly cleaned away, the plaque and/or tartar will lead to a cavity, which is a small hole in the tooth.

Treatments for Cavities Between Teeth

Like most cavities, they are usually treated with simple fillings. However, the placement of the cavity might make this more complicated. Therefore, patients might need a root canal or another type of treatment. Of course, patients will have better outcomes- and more treatment options- if they seek treatment when the cavity is small. Thus, you should see your dentist regularly to catch cavities as early as possible.

Preventing Tooth Decay

The best way to beat tooth decay is to avoid it in the first place. Luckily, good oral hygiene can go a long way when it comes to protecting your teeth. Brush your teeth at least twice per day with fluoride toothpaste. Also, remember to floss daily to remove stubborn food debris that could lead to plaque. Finally, you can finish up with a fluoride mouthwash. This gives you an extra layer of protection and also helps to freshen your breath. Stay consistent with your oral care, and your teeth will thank you!

Talk to Your Dentist

While home care is important, it’s not a replacement for regular dental exams. Only your dentist can diagnose cavities and professionally clean your teeth. Plus, regular dental exams allow your dentist to catch any problems early- which will make treatments as simple as possible. The ADA recommends visiting the dentist every six months.
