Nobody likes to lose their permanent teeth, it’s definitely not ideal, not for dentists — and especially not for patients. Obviously though, many treatments exist out there for tooth loss. Over the past couple of decades, bridges and crowns have been the de facto industry standard for edentulous patients. However, new research on over 14 other prior studies is suggesting that dental implants could not only be more cost-effective but also better enhance the quality of life for those suffering from permanent tooth loss. We’ve got the summary below:
Cost-Effectiveness — When compared to the conventional treatment options, the consensus is that dental implants are the most cost effective option. Though the treatment is more expensive than any single bridge procedure, implants end up costing less in the long-run. This is because crowns and bridges require regular maintenance and usually need to be replaced between every five and fifteen years. Once you add the possibility of multiple procedures with a bridge versus a singular procedure with an implant, the savings implants offer becomes more evident.
Patient Satisfaction — Implants on the whole provide patients with a higher rate of satisfaction post-treatment. While patients are often content with the results of bridge procedure, studies indicated that overall happiness with the treatment was higher among groups of patients with implants. The willingness-to-pay was also higher among patients who had received dental implants.
Improved Oral Health — Utilizing a standardized set of metrics, studies indicated that oral health improved more in patients who had undergone dental implant surgery when compared to those with bridges or crowns. We imagine this is due to the simplicity of caring for a dental implants, which are just like caring for regular teeth, while bridges require threading floss through and dentures cause other hassles.
Improved Quality of Life — The final conclusion of the study was that patients who had undergone dental implant surgery experienced a better quality of life due to all of the above factors listed.
