Three Things to Consider When Choosing a Dentist

May 10, 2013

Moving to a new area is difficult. On top of unpacking boxes, making new friends and learning the route from your new home to your new office, you have to find a new favorite coffee shop, Thai restaurant, park and pretty much everything else. The to-do list seems endless, but there’s one more thing you may be forgetting if you’ve moved far from home: You’ll need to find a new dentist.

On top of everything else, choosing a new dentist may seem like an overwhelming task, but it can be simple if you keep these three things in mind:

  1. Explore the dentist’s website. Looking through the website can help you make sure he/she offers the services you think you might need, the office looks comfortable and welcoming, if the office’s hours will mesh with your schedule and whether the dentist accepts your insurance.
  2. Research the dentist’s education. You want a dentist who went to a good dental school and then followed up dental school with additional training.
  3. Read online reviews. Chances are, if you’ve just moved to a new area, you don’t really know many people. Try reading online reviews of the dentists you think might be a good choice. While the wisdom of the crowd isn’t always right, you can sometimes find a nugget of wisdom in the reviews, such as “This dentist took the time to explain the procedure to me,” or “The office runs perfectly on schedule. I was only away from my office for an hour — a huge relief.”
