What to Expect at Your Check-Up

Jul 8, 2013

Anxiety and dental care seem to go hand-in-hand, with many people experiencing an extreme aversion to dental treatment due to their anxiety about checkups and dental procedures. In reality though, your regular visits to the dentist are pretty harmless. If you’re not sure what to anticipate from an appointment with your dentist or are planning a first appointment with Dr. Jahangiri, read on to find out what to expect:

  • X-Rays — At most check-ups, patients will have x-rays performed on their jaw to examine teeth for any signs of decay, cancerous tumors, bone loss or any other dental problems that can be detected. Dental x-rays are very safe, with trained professionals ensuring your safety by covering you with a lead apron. Additionally, most dental x-rays are so quick and the radiation has such low intensity that it should have no impact.

  • Examination — No, don’t worry, there’s no test. Our examination involves checking your teeth, gums and mouth for any signs of tooth decay (such as cavities), gum disease or other problems that need to be treated. Additionally, we will check for any early signs of oral cancer. Likewise, if you have any existing treatments such as fillings which eventually require replacement, we’ll check to see they’re still in good condition.

  • Cleaning — After the examination of your mouth, we’ll move on to the cleaning portion of your check-up. Cleaning involves the removal of plaque as well as tartar (which is usually only removable by a dental cleaning) from your teeth and gums. Afterwards, we’ll polish any stains on your teeth that weren’t removed during the plaque and tartar removal process.

And that’s it! Not so bad after all is it?
