Who is the ADA?

Whether you’ve been regularly reading our blog, seen the logo on the tube of toothpaste you just bought, or your dentist has been talking about it, the American Dental Association seems to be everywhere — at least everywhere when it comes to dentistry. But who exactly is the ADA and what are their goals and services to the field of dentistry? Read on to find out:

Who is the ADA?

The American Dental Association is a Chicago and Washington, D.C. based professional association comprised of nearly 160,000 dentists and dental professionals. Some of the benefits of the organization are as follows:

  • Offers A Voice for Dentists in Washington — Though not strictly speaking a “lobby” in Washington, as the largest association of dentists in the United States, the ADA certainly carries at least some clout when it comes to issues related to dentistry and health care in legislation.

  • Research and Knowledge — The Paffenbarger Research Center is an ADA affiliated institute that performs studies in many fields related to the field of dentistry such as cariology and dental chemistry. Likewise, the ADA publishes one of the most significant dental journals and subscribes to many others — owning a large volume of literature in the field of healthcare and dentistry.

  • Product Evaluation — Likely the most public aspect of the ADA is its role in the evaluation of dental products. ADA conducts clinical trials and evaluates dental products, giving those it finds safe and effective the seal of approval.

  • Accreditation — The US Department of Education delegates the responsibilities of accreditation of post-secondary dental programs to the Commission on Dental Accreditation — a subgroup of the ADA.

  • Continuing Education — As the ADA puts it: “dentistry doesn’t stand still.” Because of this the ADA promotes, supports and sometimes hosts several continuing education initiatives for dentists looking to keep up with knowledge.
