Bleaching trays are one of the most effective teeth whitening procedures on the market. They can fight fluorosis and lighten the brown stains our teeth develop with use and age. However, not all bleaching trays are the same and some will work better than others.
Bleaching trays that you find in the store are typically one-size-fits-all products. The treatments are generally milder than those overseen by dentists and take longer to be effective. You may need to wear the trays three times per day for as long as one month.
Trays that you receive from your dentist are custom-made to fit your mouth. At the first visit to your dentist’s office, molds will be taken of your teeth and sent to a dental lab. At the lab, a dental technician will fashion clear, plastic trays to the exact dimensions of your teeth. These personalized trays ensure that your teeth receive a uniform and thorough whitening.
In a second appointment, the trays will be tried on and adjusted for a proper fit. They are then worn either twice a day for thirty minutes or overnight. Trays you receive in your dentist’s office use a higher concentration of peroxide than their store-brand counterparts. This stronger treatment works faster — usually 10 to 14 days — and lasts longer. After treatment, you will receive further care instructions from your dentist as well as a schedule for follow-up appointments and check-ups.
